Unit 1 – Jamming with Jam Hsiao May 2nd
Jam Hsiao, with his explosive voice and all-around musical talent, has become one of the biggest mandopop sensations of recent times. He has released several successful albums, starred in movies, and made himself a household name.
Despite his enormous popularity he remains humble and is known as much as for his heart as for his music. Hsiao’s ability to keep his feet on the ground is perhaps a reflection of the fact that he knows how different his life could have been. A troubled teenager, Hsiao had a reading disability and performed poorly in school. Furthermore, he spent his time with street gangs often getting into fights. A guidance counselor, after learning of his talents, suggested he focus his energies on music. Hsiao followed this advice taking Jazz drumming lessons and starting a band. Later he became a self-taught keyboard player and began performing in restaurants. All this hard work bore fruit when Hsiao entered Taiwan’s reality TV show, One Million Star in 2007. His voice by turns sensitive, magnetic, and bursting, amazed the judges. Though he didn’t win the contest, he made a huge impression on viewers. Hsiao signed a deal with Warner Music the following year. A string of hit albums followed accompanied by incredible life performances. He also tried his hand at acting receiving a best new actor award in 2011 for his role in The Killer Who Never Kills.
Away from the limelight, Hsiao is known for his humanity and his devotion to good causes. He has eight pets, most of which were rescued from the streets or animal shelters. He also donates anonymously to charitable organizations and volunteers at charity events. Though Hsiao has become more accustomed to fame, he doesn’t believe himself to be a superstar, and merely says, I am no different from other man on the street.
